Are You the Victim of an Abusive Lawsuit?

The American Justice Partnership’s “Victims Project” is Gathering Case Studies to Stop Lawsuit Abuse by the Plaintiffs Bar

Dear Michigan Citizem,

Government-sanctioned intrusion on individual freedom can take many forms, but one of the costliest examples is a meritless or frivolous lawsuit.

Did you know that the staggering costs of such lawsuits are forcing schools to cut back on after-school programs, towns to close recreation facilities and increase taxes, businesses to hold products back from markets, and consumers to pay higher prices for everything we buy?

Plaintiffs' lawyers literally spend tens of millions of dollars every year to hoodwink the public into believing that their lawsuits simply protect average citizens.  But hiding behind trumped up "case studies" of "injustices," plaintiffs' lawyers contribute millions to politicians who support legislative and judicial changes that make it easier to file lawsuits with flimsy evidence.

Today, a lawsuit is filed every two seconds in the United States, resulting in a tort system that costs more than $300 billion annually.  That amounts to an annual "lawsuit tax" of more than $3,200 for each and every family of four.

But now there's a way you can fight back against "strike it rich" plaintiffs' lawyers!

The American Justice Partnership (AJP), of which the Center for Individual Freedom is a member, has created the "Victims Project" to show the public just how abusive the plaintiffs bar really is.  AJP's nationwide team is collecting verified examples of lawsuit abuse against individuals, job providers, medical professionals, charitable organizations and others.

AJP will publicize these lawsuit abuse victim stories to focus public attention on the outrageous antics of plaintiffs' lawyers who are trying to strike it rich at everyone's expense.  Major national TV and print journalists have already told us they are waiting to publicize the stories we collect!

AJP is working with its many state and national partners on this project, including the Center for Individual Freedom.  The Center for Individual Freedom is supporting this effort because the plaintiffs bar is a growing threat to individual freedom that often goes overlooked by the public and unchecked by the media.

If you have a story, we want you to tell us about it.

Verified but Unbelievable Examples!

  • An inebriated bicyclist sued after pedaling into a goal post at night. A woman who had been consuming alcohol for several hours took a ride on a bike with no light through a dark schoolyard at two o'clock in the morning. Veering off a path, she ran into a soccer goal post that had been laid there during summer construction. Hospital tests showed she was legally impaired under Michigan law with a blood alcohol content of .068. Her lawyers sued the school, but the lawsuit was dismissed on the grounds of governmental immunity. Then the lawyers sued the contractor that had been asked by a school official to move the goal posts as an unpaid favor to the school district, and the contractor wound up settling for $35,000 and went bankrupt a few months later!

  • A woman sued her brother's doctors for her own emotional distress!
In Pennsylvania, a man who was admitted to a hospital for a serious illness subsequently died of a heart attack. After he died, the lawyers for his estranged sister sued every doctor who had seen the man. But, the lawsuit had nothing to do with her brother's care! The suit claimed she suffered emotional distress and a worsening of her chronic fatigue syndrome because the doctors had granted her brother's request not to give her any information about his condition!
