In the 'Letters' section of USA Today, February 27, 2008, titled "Boycott Olympics until China respects more human rights", Willian Rowan of Lansing Michigan writes among other things: "... I will not watch the Olympics. The faces of those who suffer oppression in China will be blocking my sight."
Sounds noble doesn't it?
It's not. Mr Rowan is just parroting the typical 'liberal' line and USA today thinks he has done an exceptional job of it.
The truth is, for them, it is just easier to complain about someone elses problems then to deal with their own problems.
The fact is, we have more human rights violations in America than they do in China, and until we clean up our own act, we have no 'right' to complain about China or any other country.
Just compare Mr. Rowans story about an unemployed Chinese factory worker being jailed for circulating a petition to this story we received via email right here at home:
"Solzhenitsyn said that the worst of the tortures for him in the Russian prison system was the inescapable freezing cold. On our drive out here, we stopped in Iowa to attend the court hearing for a pro-life friend, Mrs. Donna Holman. This 72-year-old sidewalk counselor was unjustly arrested, tried, and convicted in Iowa City. On January 15th, she was put in jail for thirty days! Because she is a modest Christian and refused their degrading strip search, they put her in a solitary cel. without bedding where she froze for a sleepless night. After patting her down with her clothes on the next day, they gave her a blanket and let her have her Bible. We received an e-mail from her husband yesterday morning. Donna tried to collect-call her husband four times two nights ago, but was cut off. It brings shudders to think of what they might be doing to her in that jail. Please join us in praying and writing encouraging letters to her: Rescuer Mrs. Donna Holman Johnson County Jail P.O. Box 2510 Iowa City, IA 52244 For the return address, please put her home address: P.O. Box 135, Keokuk, IA 52632 (in the event that the Lord miraculously gets her out early)."
When an American president decided to get all high and mighty and declare that Russia did not meet his standards, he officially boycotted the Moscow olympics.
Russia may have been a little upset, but the only ones the president really hurt were the American atheletes that had been preparing 8 hours a day for a possible 'once in a life time' opportunity.
The olympics is for athletic competition. A peaceful event that promotes good around the world. Politics should be left out of it for the sake of peace, good will, and most of all the world's children who participate.
If you have a problem with a country's human rights, try to work with them, and if they won't work with you, you have three options. One, let them run their own country. Two, get your country to declare war and right the injustice, or three, take your own gun and liberate the oppressed.
But one thing you have no right to do, is sit in your easy chair, all self righteous, and penalize the athletes that have worked so hard to be able to compete in any olympics.
