Forced Freedom

"Men in Western Governments, who were themselves often modern men, did not understand that freedom without chaos is not a magic formula which can be implanted anywhere. Rather being modern men, it was their view that, because the human race had evolved to a certain level by some such year as 1950, democracy could be planted anywhere from the outside. They had carefully closed their eyes to the fact that freedom without chaos had come from a Christian base. They did not understand that freedom without chaos could not be separated from its roots. When these outward forms are imposed on a world view that never would have produced freedom without chaos in the first place, people will not stand when the pressure increases." - Francis A. Schaeffer, "How Should We Then Live", p. 249

Three years in Iraq has taught us the truths of what the Prophet Francis spoke of thirty years ago and what good men have known for a good many years prior to that, and still liberals and neo-cons alike insist on thinking that if one forces the forms of freedom on a God hating people then the forms, working retroactively, will magically create the substance. Allow me to state as clearly as possible that democracy will no more create freedom among a God hating people then books forced upon a lobotomized people will create intelligence.

That all of this is again seen as true is one result of the quagmire of Iraq where Americans die in scores and civilian Iraqis die in thousands. That this is all again seen as true is seen in how the goddess Democracy managed to sweep the cutthroat Hamas into power. It seems the 'consent of the governed' isn't such a hot idea where all the governed have known for centuries is tyrannical and dictatorial rule.

The irony with the current ruling elite's vision of spreading Democracy around the World at the point of the nuclear tipped bayonet is that if the people in the places where we most desperately want to spread Democracy were given the chance to vote on implementing our vision of Democracy in their country they would likely vote against Democracy by 10-1 margins. I know I'd vote against it if I could.

The core problem with the Mordor on the Potomac's utopian vision of a world filled with democratic nations is their anthropological starting point. The enlightened Ivy League ruling elite continues to believe that man is basically good. They continue to think that if man is just given the forms of freedom then naturally the substance of freedom will follow and man will grow into that freedom. They refuse to take into account that political or economic freedom can only come after spiritual freedom has been established. Where people remain in bondage to sin and where they are idolatrous in their worship they will never never never manage to work out genuine freedom in their socio-political or international relations. Freedom that is given to a people who remain in spiritual bondage will descend into anarchy (Schaeffer's chaos) and from there will slingshot into tyranny. Now the servants of Sauron in the White House and at the Pentagon and at the Foggy Bottom scoff at such 'Christian Kitsch,' and no amount of mocking from the truly free will change their minds.Goodness knows I've tried.

They are the experts, and all experts will tell you that you can force freedom where it has no roots.
