Action Item: We must only elect to public office, we must only appoint to judgeships, able men from all the people, men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain.
The most important rule to follow in achieving good government is to only allow good men to occupy postitions of trust in government.
How can we tell who is good?
Jesus said there is only one who is good and that is God [Matthew 19:17]. Therefore, we must only allow men who seek to obey God's commandments to be our leaders.
Can we just have good laws and elect just anyone and expect them to be bound by those laws?
Reason and experience tell us: "No"
Just look at today's politicians and judges. They ignor or redefine any law they dislike including the Constitution itself.
William Penn understood this long ago when he established the government for Pennsylvania. Although he believed good laws were necessary, he did not believe a long constitution with righteous laws would be enough to secure good government. Something more than good laws was necessary:
"Governments, like clocks, go from the motion men give them. ... Wherefore governments rather depend on men, than men upon governments. Let men be good, and the government cannot be bad. ... But if men be bad the government never good.
The last forty six years of American history, even until now, prove William Penn was correct. Penn explains further:
"I know some say, "Let us have good laws, and no matter for the men that execute them. But let them consider that though good laws do well, good men do better; for good laws may lack good men ... but good men will never lack good laws, nor allow bad ones."
As you can see today, many bad laws are being passed by the men who ignor the constitutions they are supposed to uphold, and it is the rest of us who suffer:
"When the righteous rule, the people rejoice; when the wicked rule, the people groan." - Proverbs 29:2
